Sounds like pot kettle black to me.

Perhaps some people take a Bond forum thread a little too seriously!

The usual "get a sense of humour" defence.

What are the chances we could stop this from turning into the same insult heavy mess it always ends up being? This thread has been very controversial and contentious in the past because people slip into ad hominem attacks, which is childish and ill advised.

@Getafix I respect your views and agree about Brosnan in some cases, and I realize that though your criticisms for Brosnan are exaggerated by others (you have given him a fair shake in other ways), you aren't helping your case when you randomly post a negative comment about him after two years of this thread being on ice. By doing so you're fitting the image of the random hate machine people have billed you as, falling into their traps. You can give strong debates against Brosnan, I've read them and agreed with your thoughts-in many ways, Pierce might too-so I think you have far more to offer as a critic beyond the pithy criticisms and randomly detracting one-word diatribes about him that can slip out.

I just don't want this to get nasty like it did two years ago, and where I think you actually ended up being jumped on by a lot of people who were getting outraged in a somewhat exaggerated fashion. Especially since you were often only quoting what Pierce himself said, which lined up with your impressions of his era as being a sort of missed opportunity. But I hope that's water under the bridge and there's no danger of any headhunting happening presently.

From where I'm standing it looks like a reaction to the ambivalent response to your usual shtick. It's not dissimilar to the FB page I mentioned. The joke is fine when it's clever, but when it's dying on its arse it's usually a sign that your material needs throwing in the bin.

I think it's time for Getafix to watch GoldenEye again for the first time in 22 years. :D

I have to rewatch it nightly to keep the anger levels up.

I'm impressed with how well you remember the history of the thread. Is that really what happened?

I think I bumped this out of boredom with the lack of B25 news tbh.

I see it rubs some Brosnanites up the wrong way to have the great man's words quoted back at them so perhaps, as you say, time to leave this particular thread alone.

I think the lack of respect being shown to a serious thread is shocking!

It's very disrespectful to Pierce IMO

Most actors can't bare to watch themselves act. It's quite common. I wonder how Tim feels about his Bond films. I'm genuinely curious.

Tim Doesn't need to rewatch them to know how great they are.

Any way, while I agree with you that probably watching yourself on screen is excruciating regardless of how good you are, I think Brosnan's original comments went much further than this, extending to how the part was not fleshed out enough (in his opinion) and how he never got a handle on the character.

I thought that interview and his comments were really interesting. Despite what some think around here I've never hated Brosnan per se, I've just always felt his Bond was a major disappointment. When he came out and basically articulated what I'd felt for years I felt at least partly vindicated.

Would be fascinating to hear more from Brosnan and Dalton about how they perceive their own eras. I think PR people and probably the EON lawyers prevent they going much beyond platitudes though usually.

Joking aside there's a decent thread discussion hidden in here if we can only put the hate and Dalton bashing to one side.

I did a reread of some of it once it bumped mid-yesterday, @Getafix. I just read a bunch of people piling on your for very benign comments you sent their way, which were supported by what Pierce said about the slip-ups in his era and what he thought may've been his own insecurities. People made it seem like you were fudging facts to ruin his name or something asinine like that, but I could clearly see you were making well supported points using the man's own words. You can be very vocal about Brosnan and his era, and I know that rubs people wrong, since your views are well known by now and they don't enjoy you bringing up what you don't like all the time. In some ways, they are justified as it could risk getting old, but in other ways you also have a history of posting strong arguments that do back up your statements about him.

I would only suggest that you keep on posting those strong arguments, while refraining from the one sentence diatribes I mentioned that detract from your strong points. Don't give them a reason to call you the thing they want you to look like, giving them fuel for fires. Some will always be upset with you, however, and immediately try to counter your criticisms of Brosnan by rushing to hate on Dalton, as they know it's a soft spot for you. That's when things get nasty and I'd like to see those kinds of situations diffused. It just gets exhausting when people try to paint each other as villains. It's opinions, nothing more, nothing less, and there's no reason to take it all so seriously.

I love Kara too, by the way, so I have your back in that regard. She's too adorable to hate.

When they go low, we go high!

    ;)

Thing is these days a spot of Dalton criticism doesn't bother me in the slightest. Unless it's @BAIN123 saying Dalton is 'too dramatic' or 'is too TV' again for the 18th millionth time!!

    I agree!

Well argued Dalton bashing is fine with me. I can see his faults too.

I guess I felt there was an interesting thread in here about how the actors see their own performances. I'd love to hear more about how Dalton felt his era went. These days he seems to just come out with cheesy platitudes like he knows Bond is his pension and doesn't want to stray too far from the EON line

The Brosnan films are such fun. Cracking entertainment! He was, for my money, one of the best Bond's. I'm sure if he took a chance on rewatching his movies he'd come to realise that he did an absolutely terrific job!

At least this thread's owner is convincing with his wicked senses of humour at times. :))

Unlike the anti-Spectre fraction who behaves like little spoiled brats who's favourite toy named Skyfall has been taken away. :P

Brosnan has a great sense of humour. All his interviews are a hoot and he clearly plays around with his critics by regularly saying that he wasn't the greatest Bond or that he can't watch himself etc.

Brosnan was the right Bond for the 90's, the Seinfeld decade (basically much ado about nothing). Once 911 happened and life became more consequential, he outlived his usefulness.

I do enjoy his films much more these days, because they are breezy, light entertainment. I've found that I can enjoy them much more if I don't try to analyze or critique them. As I've said, SP has made me appreciate the Brosnan era more, because I realize that he did a much better job than he was credited for with rubbish material.

If they are going to write in the same nonsensical manner that they did the last one, an actor like Brosnan is just what the doctor ordered. Someone with a bit of slick laid back cool & elegance to carry the material, rather than a smouldering intensity.

I actually really enjoyed GE when I watched it last week for the first time ever in the times I've watched it. It was at one point the most disappointing Bond experience I'd had at the cinema, that isn't the case anymore but I'll acknowledge it now GE is not a bad Bond film at all.

It's by far Brosnan's best and will admit it has taken over 2 decades but it's definitely not languishing near the bottom, dare I say I think I prefer it to LTK now.

Jason living in your glass house again aren't we?

You can't take some moral high ground when you feel the same way about the other film, you are just as bad admit it.

My dislike of SPECTRE is annoying but your dislike of Skyfall is identical, we are as bad as each other.

I suppose there hasn't been enough Brosnan bashing lately, so the bumping of a dead, nearly three year old thread was warranted.

I actually came here to say something nice about Brosnan and acknowledge a film I didn't have a high regard for had finally started to click with me, GE is actually better than a good number of entries now for me.

I just think that if they'd stuck with his take here rather than making him less serious and arming him with corny one liners and recycled plots from the other eras he might not have his era being perceived as it is now, although I know some actually like those films.

GE had the best cast as well as the best writing (although some of the writing is still kind of dodgy).

The action is also the best edited in that era.

I have a soft spot for GE and always have though I admit it does look dated with all those computers and models (I wish Meddings work had looked slightly better in some scenes).

GoldenEye simply is the classic of the modern era. Maybe Casino Royale came close, but it has to be seen first in another 10 years if it still will be as universally loved as GoldenEye is today.

I think compared to CR, Campbell's first film does look a bit shoddy sometimes. But it's still moves at a fun pace, features some great action, some atmospheric cinematography and one of my favorite Bond girls.

GoldenEye is 11 years old than CR, people tend to forget that. Also with CR EON stepped up their game considerably production value wise.
If you take this in account, GE is a true timeless gem.
