I certainly don't think that was Eon's intention before the movie was about to premiere, it's simply a result of the long delay and the interest accumulated on all the loans. Additionally, the squandered millions in marketing costs certainly has to be considered and how it'll impact the movie's overall profits. We might never get a clear and definitive figure until some Hollywood executive decides to write a book in the future, just as we didn't really find out all the nitty-gritty of 80's studio money losses until Steven Bach published his tell-all book in 1999.

I'll be glad when this movie has finally been released and is behind us. It feels like we've been talking about this movie and its possible potential for ever. Not long now.

Indeed and because it's been 6 years since the last film, that's a long time. I feel bad for Craig to end his run this way but the initial delays on all on him. He should have pulled the trigger faster on his decision.

As far as the BO goes, it will do well but has a ton going against it. In addition to what has been said, we must also compare to recent tent poles like Black Widow, which made a paltry 378 mil. Marvel is the biggest brand in the world and the average per film leading into BW was nearly 1 billion. Yes, the AVERAGE was that high and BW made under 400 mil. Ouch.

Plus, if NTTD winds up being as anti-white male as it seems by the marketing... things won't go well in Western countries. Word of mouth will harm the ongoing financial take week to week. I just hope the film is good and Craig goes out strong.

Uhm…where are you seeing this “anti-White male” marketing? Nothing I’ve seen reads close to that. At all. I guess competent minority women within stories translates to “anti-White male” for you.

The entire world is antiwhite. If you don't see that, open your eyes.

    Being a non-White person, I know that’s BS.

As a non-white as well, I want everyone to quickly consider the following and then let's all get back on topic, please.

February is black history month in the States and is celebrated. What if someone tried to make March White history month? Consider the outrage that would follow. Every single other group, including mine own, Hispanic, can come together to celebrate their culture, EXCEPT FOR WHITES. If that happened, media, academia, the entire infrastructure of the planet would call them vile names and attempt to destroy them.

Think about it. Now, back to Bond!

That’s an incredibly reductionist and obtuse view. Black History Month is observed because the diverse achievements of Black Americans were not studied, celebrated or--in many cases--even acknowledged. White Americans are the racial (or ethnic) majority within the US. White history is, by default, the center around which curriculum and culture are fashioned. White history month doesn't exist because it doesn't need to exist. White history is taught, lived and experienced. Black history, on the other hand, is typically limited to a highlight reel of slavery and civil rights. Those should be studied but Black achievements in the US go well beyond those periods in history. In many cases, those achievements were made in spite of slavery and American apartheid.

You completely missed the point. White history is being REWRITTEN all the time; in fact, completely erased. Do a Google images search of "American inventors" and see what pops up. Try it.

Remember, history is written by the victors. Anyway, back to Bond, please!

I love the comic redundancy of liturgical vocabulary. Can something be "lived" and not "experienced"?

Anyway, does anyone have any insight into how box office predictions are done by these professional outfits? I kind of get how they estimate opening weekend figures, but beyond that?

Indiewire reports that NTTD is projected to open domestically within the $65-$85 million range with an estimated total final amount of $150 million. Early figures but they look realistic to me.

Sounds like a conservative estimate from Indiewire. If NTTD will have an opening weekend in that range, it should do much more than $150m. If the reviews and word-of-mouth will be closer to Casino/Skyfall level than Quantum/Spectre, then I think $200m will be within reach. Shang-Chi opened with $75m and is now at $196m. Free Guy opened with $28m and is not at $114m. NTTD's legs should be something in between those two films'.

Isn't it also odd to have a kind of broad range like that for the opening weekend prediction and then a single number for the final figure? Isn't more known about the likely opening weekend than is known about what comes later?

Finally someone who understands. You must be referring to the 700,000 White men who died during the American Civil War and the tens of millions who died during WWI and WWII.

But that's no big deal, right? And no big deal White people are under 10% of the world's population and falling fast.

Anyway, I think the current international box office seems lower than normal for some reason. Black Widow's international cum was pretty low compared to all other Marvel films so what gives? Are people in other territories not going to the movies? Did it not open in China? What's the deal?

The main problem with BW was that the film sucked and the day and date streaming release killed its performance in the US. Plus, a couple of months ago the confidence of the audience was lower than now and it didn’t benefit from a China release.

Unless I’m mistaken, White men were the instigators of the American Civil War, WW1 and WW2. So, White Men (as well as plenty of others) died at their own hands. It’s a big deal, of course, but I’m not sure how wars started by White men prove the subjugation or marginalization against White men by other ethnic groups.

Also, no one is systematically culling the population of White people around the world. Populations rise and fall based upon a host of factors. Is it anyone’s fault that populations are changing? In other words, there is no malicious intent around population decline or growth.

The international box office is low because of the pandemic. Theater capacity has been reduced due to distancing measures. Some countries restrict movement. Some countries/states/cities are on lockdown. Some people are wary of or are medically restricted from congregating in large groups. BW was also available on Disney+ for an extra fee. Last we were told by Disney, that accounted for around $125 million. That’s, at least, $125 million not earned at the box office. BW did not open in China.

First, I feel like the media is starting to really generate solid buzz. Lots of newspaper stories around, and so - we're all biased on this site, of course, but I feel like there's a pretty broad excitement for this movie.

    Second:

I want to believe that a big film opening would for many people (myself included) bring a really welcome sense of normalcy back after a miserable couple of years.

In other words, the Bond 'brand' (I hate that word) has usually been adventure, glamour, etc., and it can remain that. But if people also associate it with relaxing with friends and family, enjoying things we used to take for granted, a bit of escapism and social fun . . .

If NTTD can tap into some of that, it could do quite well.

Throw in some positive word of mouth and a good release in China, and it could be add up to real money quickly.

Thank you. I do wish to avoid spoilers. I've already stopped opening the Identified Spoiler boxes, and now will refrain from opening this thread until after I've seen, oh, what is it ? That new action thriller movie...already saw Knives Out, so it isn't that one. It'll come to me...

The local cinema I'm seeing it at has NTTD showing 11 screens. The next closest is Dune with 2.

    Surely that says something!

It wouldn’t surprise me if it breaks all records in the UK, but has a more tepid response in the US. Aside from a few 60s Spymania and SF, Bond has never made as much of a big impression in the US market.

Several of the movies have been top 10 box office hits in their years of US release. Before SP, every Bond since GE out grossed the one previous too it. Bond films generally are noticed in America. It looks possible that it could take number one at the box office away from Shang-Chi.

Success in the US will depend on momentum, I think. A week's worth of positive reviews and international success will have a snowball effect. NTTD is already tracking to a $70 million (+/-) opening in the US. Seven + days of buzz will push this to Skyfall's opening or even a bit beyond. All of Craig's Bond films have had amazing legs in the US. So, an $80 million opening will almost guarantee $200 million. I think NTTD will fall somewhere between $750 and $800 million worldwide.

They do fine, but they were never as hyped as they are in international markets. CR’s domestic gross looks unimpressive when compared to its contemporaries, but because it was HUGE outside the US it wasn’t an issue.

Also, CR's legs--and those of the other Craig movies--were amazing in the US.
