Dead Reckoning Part 1 watched this several times over the last few days and the more I watch it the more brilliant subtle moments I am seeing. I really like this film a lot, multiple layers of story telling. There is a lot of symbolism in this film.

I want to find the alone time to watch this in one sitting now that it's available digitally. I am dying to return to it for another viewing. Can't wait to discuss it even further with you and others.

The issues I have with the third act are lessening, overall this is just a really fun movie. At one point I did think this is like watching a good Bond film.

Really, really fun movie. I'd say the fun/entertainment factor, the flawless pacing, and the new characters were some of the strongest elements of this installment.

I can't wait to see the 4K Disk version with the IMAX shots, I actually have no idea how much of the film was shot in IMAX. I will buy the Steelbook so it matches up with the rest of the 4K M: I films I have.

I bought the digital version of DRp1 from Prime which is entirely in letterbox format.

Yeah I'm counting down the days 'til Christmas so I can enjoy the physical 4K release. I bet it's gonna look marvelous.

It was all in letterbox in IMAX cinemas, so don't get your hopes up.

That's disappointing, I was looking forward to part 2, next year.
With the actors strike though it's understandable

Very, very disappointed but completely expected at this rate. It'll give them more time in post-production hopefully at least, so that's a good sign.

Overall it's good news... more time to fine tune everything, and I also just read M:I8 will have 3 weeks of exclusive IMAX screens.

If they need to shoot more scenes that means these two films will have been the best part of five years between the cameras first rolling and the final shot. That’s crazy.

After what happened with Oppenheimer taking them all a week after, that's not a surprise. Lets hope they have some IMAX format footage this time (DRP1 didn't).

A 2 year wait for a spy franchise I love's next installment seems a short time to wait for me.

    I can wait.

Though to be honest after MI7 I’m starting to feel done with these films. The only thing that would entice me is if they find another director or call this the big finale of the films.

I loved McQ's first two efforts but I found the last one lacking. I'd be interested in hearing if they've any thoughts about what they do after Part 2.

What is this crap I read about Dead Reckoning Part Two not being called Dead Reckoning Part Two anymore? I swear I haven't been this upset since I found out The Dark Knight wasn't called Batman Continues.

I hope they have not printed all the Bluray and 4K disk sleeves already, it will look a bit silly with Part 1 plastered all over them and Part 2 never happens (name change).

Apparently, Batman Continues was the name of Tim Burton’s unmade 3rd film.

It doesn’t make sense to have to lose Part 2. Part 1 was a HUGE cliffhanger. I too, am getting a bit tired of the formula for MI. The best thing about Dead Reckoning was the fact Ethan wasn’t on the run from IMF! Tom Cruise is trying too hard to be the hip old man who has a death wish. He should try drama or comedy again, not just action sequels.

Reminds me of them not being able to stick with a title for Edge of Tomorrow, so the blu-ray copies looked real goofy.

My bluray copy has both titles on the cover lol so I guess i can choose one. It was a bit daft.

Ughhh I had a feeling this would happen with this stupid actors strike. But it will be worth the wait! I want them to finish this movie right and not rushed. MI7 was my favorite of the whole series. I want MI8 to top it. If it means waiting another year to for them to fine tune things so be it.

I haven't seen Dead Reckoning but I saw the clip of the bike jump on YouTube. I'm referring to the scene from the film not the promo video shown months before the release of the film.

I thought the jump was very poorly done. All we see is a black blob of a figure falling. There is no medium shot to show Cruise's face so it looks cgi. I don't believe Cruise did the full jump. The promo video shows Cruise on a wire. He wasn't falling hundreds of feet. I reckon the actual jump and fall is cgi. It's poorly done. No sense it's actually Tom Cruise riding a bike off a cliff.

If you're going to get Tom Cruise to do a huge jump and free fall why not show his face as he jumps? And yes, I know he did real jumps on a wire but that's not the camera shot we see in Dead Reckoning. If people want to say "Cruise did jump off a ramp"... I'm not disputing that. I'm just saying I don't believe the behind the bike camera shot scene in the final cut of the film is Tom Cruise. It looks an obvious cgi rendered figure. If Cruise really did the jump and the long fall then parachute opening... why not film it from the reverse angle? Have the camera looking directly at Cruise as he leaps so we see his face. Surely that would prove it was Cruise! But all we get is a black type blob of a figure falling. It's really poor in term of cinematography/framing the camera.

I think it's all smoke and mirrors. This post from another film blog is probably close to the truth...

I don't want to be a debbie downer but I think Fallout and Dead Reckoning are bad, and McQuarrie has gone David Yates on this franchise.

My main problem is the CGI. The point of doing real stunts (for me) is because it's mesmerising and jaw dropping to see someone do something so dangerous. But if you perform the same stunt with green screen and CGI, and I can see that it's fake, my jaw doesn't drop because there's nothing to be impressed by.

McQuarrie has taken the unusual step of filming real stunts and then dowsing them with so much CGI the entire thing looks fake anyway!

Prior to Rogue Nation they boasted about Cruise holding his breath for 7 minutes, but then in the film there isn't a 7 minute underwater take with Cruise holding his breath, instead he's in a CGI contraption AND that contraption moves him off screen AND the film cuts away to the other characters. So what was the point in learning to hold your breath Tom?

In Fallout they boast about the skydiving sequence, but as soon as Cruise leaps out the plane there are CGI clouds everywhere which render the entire scene fake-looking. What was the point in jumping out of a plane if they were just going to make it look like a soundstage?

Dead Reckoning's train sequence takes it to the next level. Bike jumps, rooftop fights, a runaway train... all filmed for real, yet everything covered with CGI so it looks fake anyway. So what really was the point?

All this means that the behind the scenes featurettes are better than the movies themselves. Watching a train fly off a cliff is cool in the behind the scenes footage, but in the movie it's 90% CGI and there are 4 or 5 different cuts in the spaces of seconds.

    It's all just noise.

I tend to agree. The halo jump in Fallout was clearly cgi. What Cruise and McQuarrie did was film some real skydiving footage to trick the audience that was in the final film. The actual scene looked cgi. Far less convincing than the halo jump in TND.

I also thought Ethan Hunt crashing into the train carriage was poorly done. No tension. For example Bond landing on the tanker truck at the start of the truck chase in LTK far better executed.

The fight on the top of the train is all cgi too. As was the train fight in Indiana Jones 5. It's blatant. The film makers can't be bothered to get stuntmen on a train so greenscreen it all.

Whilst it's admirable Cruise does some or all of his stunts (I doubt he did the full cliff jump as represented in the final cut of the film) I don't think MI franchise has out Bonded James Bond. The sky jump in TSWLM is far more impressive. Better jump, better camera angle, more cinematic. And MI 7 made less money than NTTD so the worldwide audience clearly preferred Bond to Hunt.

"We don't see his face therefore it's clearly CGI" is a new level of film analysis that I've never seen before.

CGI or not, I haven't been wowed by some of the latest stunts anyway. Maybe I'm just burned out. Despite enjoying Dead Reckoning a lot (certainly more than Fallout), the scene in which Hunt jumps off the cliff barely registered with me. Same with the helicopter rope climbing in Fallout.

And both films have the same problem in the third act: they each have a long-winded chase that's just filler against the more interesting events taking place elsewhere. In Fallout, it's Hunt flying the chopper, and in Dead Reckoning, it's Hunt chasing the train.

I got more enjoyment out of the very last action moments in each film, that is, the helicopter fight with Cavill in Fallout, and the train climbing in Dead Reckoning. I do greatly prefer the train scene to the helicopter fight though.

But for my money, the best scene in either film is the airport scene in Dead Reckoning.

Though to be honest after MI7 I’m starting to feel done with these films. The only thing that would entice me is if they find another director or call this the big finale of the films.
I do feel they're going to have to shake things up if they want to keep making these movies. Bring about some substantial change. Maybe nothing so dramatic as having John Woo replace Brian De Palma, but still, something substantial.

Oh I found the helicopter chase utterly thrilling at all parts- it's a pretty perfect climax to an action film if you ask me. And the rope-climbing looks terrifying as it's clearly real.

I agree that the cliff jump feels a bit oddly perfunctory though- it just kind of... happens.

I have watched a lot of the behind the scenes footage of DRp1 and the fight on the train is all done for real, even the obstacle were real which astounded me. They built all the carriages to fight and walk on.

I watched it again on Friday and I think I did spot one or two shots on top of the train which looked to have been in studio (don't ask me to remember which though!) which is fair enough- those may even have been reshoots. And the tunnel business would be in studio of course. But yes, as you say, the majority is being done for real on top of a real train.

On my TV it looked as though it was shot at a very high frame rate, not sure if that is true though it could account for how it looks a bit fake. I ended up de saturating the color and it looked better.

High frame rate? I hope you don't have your motion smoothing on? Tom and McQ don't like that! :)

These recent comments perhaps sum up where MI has gone wrong? a focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the stunt work when we all know that it takes more than stunts to make a great movie. I think they need to recalibrate and perhaps the additional year may enable that. It's also ironic that they have a huge ammount of acting talent within the team but are they getting the opportunities to use that talent?
