To be fair the kills have been good so far and Jason is imposing, I just find the so called teenagers irratation levels dialed up to 11, as a viewer you don't mourn any of there deaths lol.
I'm not a hypocrite; story has never been my reason for enjoying the series. I'm in it for a few pounds of B³ as well. But the "remake" or "reboot" or whatever the 2009 film is, lacks focus. Early on, it's a forgone conclusion that the film isn't even going to allow any blood to flow to our brains; Bay and Nispel desperately want to direct it somewhere else. So it's just about the male gaze then? Sure. This film is so categorically male-oriented, it barely moves above that baseline of gore and tits that are the x and y of the slasher genre.
All that said, I enjoy these things just like I enjoy a slice of pizza. Neither are masterpieces in their respective businesses, but they fulfil their greasy promise with ease. In fact, I wish Platinum Dunes hadn't stopped making F13, ANOES and TCM films because as genre product, their slasher output showed promise. Nowadays, it's all about the "elevated" slasher, and that's a good thing--I'm a fan! But a simple no-brainer of a B³ slasher is part of my balanced horror film diet as well.

Exactly. There is a "cosy" element to a good slasher that I appreciate very much. Call me immoral, a little insane perhaps, but a well-crafted slasher flick--my demands are few and my bar pretty low--is an effective stress reliever.

I've also read the manga and the first novelization, the only book that has ever managed to give me goosebumps.
Yes, I'm a J-Horror fan, particularly of the Ring and Grudge series. Ju-On -- did you know that's not even a word in Japanese? -- is my favourite. Its low-budget qualities, along with its strong blend of modern and traditional Japanese culture and storytelling, provides those horror fan with everything he needs.
If you're a fan of body horror, don't rob yourself of seeing this one in theaters. You will not regret it. I've never seen anything like it. The less said, the better, but wow wow wow, this was an experience.

How does it compare to Possessor, on a violence/gore scale?
It's not as "violent" in the sense of "action," aside from one very critical moment, but in terms of gore and unbelievable prosthetics and makeup work, it's 1,000x more insane. Watching a couple trailers after I saw it finally, I was happy to see they didn't really reveal any off the shocking finale, which is where it dips into some unprecedented territory. I don't think I've ever been crying laughing while simultaneously having my jaw agape all at the same time so consistently as I did in that last half hour or so. Sick stuff, and I loved it.

Maybe to capitalise on the holiday period/people being more likely to have a bit of time off in the days after Christmas/New Year? That and I think it's no longer a rule of thumb that horror movies succeed best when released in October, if that's even been a rule of thumb in the film industry for a long time now (horror films are so common nowadays that you can conceivably release them anytime. I can see why this particular one would be most likely to succeed end of year/beginning of next).

Just came back from seeing it. I will say, there were a couple questionable decisions I didn’t dig, but overall it was still a blast and I definitely got what I came for! I honestly wish they had waited until December to put it in theaters, but it was extremely Christmas-y in the best way possible, and I look forward to it joining my personal favorite Christmas movies rotation, hehe.
I do think this franchise peaked with 2 - I even said as much to my brother when we went to see it in the theater a couple years ago, just saying “I think we’re witnessing the peak, how could it get better?” basically. Terrifier 3 is lots of fun, though, with Art being his usual entertaining self and Sienna being an awesome protagonist. My ranking on this series is pretty definitively 2 > 3 > 1, and if I included All Hallows Eve it’s more or less tied with 1. Cannot wait to see what’s next!
The original The Strangers scared me so badly, I refuse to even watch this trailer, lol.
And that's not hyperbole. I hated every second of the first one because it was executed so damn well. It tapped right into my fear-bucket, and filled it to the rim.
Don't worry, this new trilogy is horrible and not remotely scary. The original terrified the hell out of me on release, I even recall sneaking into the theater with my cousin cause I didn't have my ID at the time and it was totally worth the hassle. Never saw the sequel, but the new one they released this year? Total garbage through and through. It was a pretty rough remake/reboot of the original albeit totally devoid of tension and scares.
That’s sad, then. The first was so great. So tense. My stomach was in a goddamned knot. And the mere concept, so simple, could have intelligently been expanded.
Although I’d never watch another one (at first because I never wanted to feel that dread again, lol, and; now that you’ve explained the new ones are trash, I wouldn’t want to see the follow ups because I don’t want to see the original sullied), this is sad news and shows the laziness that sometimes drives the films in this genre
It’s a shame because independent horror-thrillers have been a force the past couple of years. It’s one of the only genres to continue looking into spec scripts from new writers. The filmmaking has been super intelligent on tiny budgets, being rewarded with terrific box office….
Even some of its more traditional jump scares got me good. Beyond that, the dread and suffocating tension were so palpable. I still get chills thinking about the one killer lurking quietly in the background while Liv Tyler's character is standing there nervously, no clue he's hiding in the dark. So effective.
For the latest one, just picture someone remaking the 2008 version, mucking up everything that made it great, and removing all the tension and scares and fear. Plus, the acting was dreadful. It's all bad, I really can't recall a single thing I liked about it.
