I also own - and have owned for over fifty years - the original "Killing Me Softly" album (on vinyl, and later on CD). At least in Europe, the 12" vinyl had a strange cover that you could fold out along the silhouette of the piano.

I also bought her first album "First Take" much later, the latter containing her other major hit, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Which was written in 1957 by British socialist songwriter Ewan MacColl for his former lover (and yet later wife), Peggy Seeger (Pete's half-sister). Roberta's version is simply super-beautiful, and her later songs really just complemented this impression.

It should also be mentioned, while Roberta really embodied "Killing Me Softly", that it was alleged written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox for a singer named Lori Lieberman, after she told them about her feelings during a performance by Don McLean. This was refuted later by Fox, but Gimbel once confirmed it and McLean actually stated that he was proud to have been the inducement for the song, one of the greatest ever in Roberta's version.

A sad day for cinema indeed, may they rest in peace.

Hackman is a true legend, he will live on forever through his many, many, great performances in film.

I'm very glad we took the opportunity a few years ago to discuss how truely great Gene Hackman was, just one great performance after another.

This news has truly saddened me. Of course we all know that it will happen, and he lived to a very decent age. But it’s still a shock. By appearing on the silver screen they remain almost immortal.

Easily one of the greatest actors of all time for my money. He brought so much to even the smallest role. You believed Gene Hackman was the character he was playing, and he made it look effortless. A sad day for film.

RIP Gene Hackman, a true legend of cinema.

Some how, it hits harder when, as a movie fan, you have gown up watching great performace after great perfomance. From a 12th birthday treat to see A Bridge Too Far at the ABC cinema to the classic VHS era like BAT21 or The Package

Especially loved him as the brooding, bummed-out P.I. Harry Moseby in the neo-noir Night Moves [1975] ...

RIP Gene Hackman. Incredible actor, consistently brilliant leading man and king of 1970s thrillers, and the best on-screen Lex Luthor ever for my money. He leaves behind an extraordinary acting legacy.

Exactly this. Even with great actors, sometimes you can see the work a little bit, but with Gene, he was just the character, every time. Even in the occasional dud film (The Domino Principle being my favorite example), he always turned in a good performance. My favorite actor of all time.

Gene was genuinely one of the best actors to ever do it, so dynamic and committed in every role I've seen him in. It's sad because I've thought about him randomly over the last few years, knowing he was happily retired and really getting up there in age, but I knew this day would eventually come. RIP to a real legend.

Just found out about Hackman and his wife, like many Gene is one of my favourite actors a powerhouse in cinema. Genuinely gutted, I am off work for a week tomorrow I will be watching a few of his films for sure, Superman, Unforgiven and French Connection to start with.

    R. I. P. One of the greatest.

The Conversation is my personal favorite of his work, but some other big ones for me are Superman I+II, Night Moves, The French Connection, and Hoosiers. I think I’ll watch Bonnie and Clyde today for the very first time (I know, crazy I haven’t seen it yet!) in his honor.

Bonnie and Clyde is a great movie that was a pre curser to a grittier decade to follow, ground breaking film that helped define a new era.

Looking through my movies I have The Quick and the Dead on Bluray which is a lot of fun, brilliant cast.

Oh, you are in for a treat! 'Bonnie an Clyde' is a stone cold classic, and Hackman is superb in it
( mind you , he is superb in everything!!)
I hope to watch 'The French Connection ' for the umpteenth time!

It's not as good as the 80's Hammer stuff, but Keach is Hammer, so i'm a happy camper.

About two weeks after my father passed away, having dealt with all the immediate consequences of that event, I was sitting at home, feeling depressed, when I suddenly recovered the urge to watch a movie. I was looking for something I hadn't watched before but that had some element of familiarity and comfort. Ended up watching Class Action, starring Gene Hackman. Soon after, Extreme Measures, starring, you guessed it, Gene Hackman. Then, Get Shorty, The Chamber, Twilight, Under Suspicion... yes, 90's Hackman was right up my alley. One could say he helped me get out of my slump. By the end of the year, I'd watched 12 of his films, which, counting the 12 others I'd seen before, made for a total of 24 films. I still make a point to watch at least one Hackman film every year. I'm up to 29 now, but I have many more to watch still. It's reassuring.
