Dalton was Bond when I first saw
Bond in the cinema. I'm sure it played a part in my liking him so much. TLD seemed the perfect Bond movie in many respects. I still think it stands up pretty well although I now acknowledge that it flags in the second half and the villains (particularly Joe Don) are a bit limp. Koskov is actually okay - just wish he'd played it a bit straighter.

Fair comment. With regards to the pros....score is excellent, Necros is is a good henchman, the Aston is back and the pre - title sequence is great. The Fleming inspired script is also gripping.

TLD has really gone way down in my recent viewing. While it's heart is in the right place, It's ultimately ruined by it's stupid lame villains and Kara who is as dim as Mary Goodnight. Dalton isn't even as good. In fact he comes off way more nervous in TLD than Pierce in GoldenEye.

I don't get the Dalton nerves part when I watch it...He seems cold as ice and focused to me.

He's cold in the scenes with Puskin, but the lighter bits come off as forced and makes him look nervous.

I think that's his style rather than nerves personally.

Not sure I detect the Dalton nerves. I think TLD and LTK are both decent. Not absolute classics but top half of the table IMO

LTK is pretty good, but I think TLD is too silly. It has some good moments, only to be ruined by something dumb. The Aston Martin chase was great only to be ruined by that stupid cello sled scene.

Q: is Pierce really all that bad?

no, it was everything else around him in his later films that failed him.

The issues with the script is that it was written 'middle of the road' for Brosnan. It wasn't tailored enough for Dalton.....who stepped in at the last minute. The specialist script happened with LTK.

Brosnan was a good Bond. The management and writers at Eon were the main problem. They gave him weak scripts, which he made the most out of.

Give Craig the same & see how he'd fare.
Yeah, I know, he'd say fook off & leave the set....

Out of the 6 Bond actors so far, the only one who can elevate a mediocre script is Roger Moore. Give the guy even the most juvenile one-liner, and he will turn it into gold. Can you imagine MR, TSWLM, or even OP without Sir Rog? Connery, Dalton and Craig would have been awful in such movies, but Moore just makes some of his magic and the whole thing just becomes hugely entertaining.

I agree completely. Moore proved that time and time again. Very underrated actor in my view.

Largely I agree, although I think for the most part his performance in TLD is better.
Overall he's good in the film but nerves do sometimes seem to be an issue. For me this is most obvious in the Moneypenny scenes - probably the least convincing in the series IMO.

Rog could pull off the line "Moneypenny be a dear" (he has a similar line at the races in AVTAK). Dalton could not. It just doesn't sound right coming from him.

"Why James, she's just your type"
    "Wrong again Moneypenny...you are"

    Yuck

That's true, but Bliss was no Maxwell, and that could have affected the interplay between them. Dalton was uncomfortable with the lighter fare no doubt. I always got the impression he couldn't give a toss about the one liners and just wanted to get on with scowling and being a bad 'a'.

It's fairly minor though as its just one short scene in the film.

It's no mystery. Moore is a talented and perhaps more importantly a skilled screen actor. He's RADA trained (everyone always seems to forget that) and went through the last years of the old Hollywood star making system. He actually knows how to deliver a line, stand in front of a camera and do drama and comedy. I'm not remotely saying he is a brilliant actor in the wider sense, but he knows his craft from a technical perspective, understands his own strengths and weaknesses, and puts it all together on screen for maximum impact. His big joke is that he can't act and he's a fraud etc. but he's anything but. He's a hard working professional who makes it look effortless.

Moore is no Dicaprio, Hardy or Hopkins in terms of acting brilliance, but the latter 3 are no Moore in terms of star power and sheer magnetic presence. Moore (and Connery) never needed to bulk up for a role, he never changed his accent, yet he achieved fame and stardom to such extent that Dicaprio could only dream of. Connery and Moore are, as far as I've seen since I've been a Bond fan, the only 2 actors I have never seen anyone say 'I hate them'. Some may not find them great actors, but I have never seen a living soul not have some kind of admiration for Sean's and Roger's sheer charisma, charm and magnetic presence.

Always was a huge fan of Roger and his expression and one liners. I thought Pierce was good with the one liners, a little more understated but had good one lines. In TWINE his Christmas quip and Perfectly rounded figure was ace. he was a good bond. It is very hard to judge each bond against the other, different eras and technology. We can laugh at some of the gadgets in the very early films now, most of our cars have Sat Nav and electric this and that. its like comparing Tyson to Ali.. you can't.

    Anyone see, the November Man?
I would never say Brosnan played a "bond" in they flick as the character is much different. That said, I thought he was phenomenal in the role on top of the fact that the story was great and thrilling. He was ruthless in it. That shows he is capable of that kind of Bond.

I grew up in Brosnan Bond so he's got a spot in my heart. I agree that creative choices were made that were very 90s and tried to bridge the gap between Moore and Dalton.

His films and Bond has its place in the pantheon.

I think Anthony Hopkins arguably has similar on screen presence to Sean and Rog, although a very different type of actor.

@Getafix I agree but look at 'Silence of the Lambs' for instance. Hopkins has astonishing screen presence in that film, but it's all down to his huge acting talent. Hopkins isn't Lecter naturally, he becomes Lecter through intense work preparation. Moore and Connery act like themselves in any film they appear in, and the beauty of it is, it simply works! Any other actor in 'Red October' playing a russian submarine commander speaking with an american accent would be ridiculed. But with Connery, a lot of people think that is one of his best roles, despite keeping his scottish accent.

Without a doubt. What did you think of Brosnan's The World Is Not Enough performance. He kind of took the Dalton approach for that one.

Brosnan's performances were a bit too self-conscious, but other than that I really like him as Bond (TWINE aside, but I blame primarily the script + director for that one).
