Just a fun little question, would Heracles have worked as a title?

Here's a chap who makes movie pitch meeting videos that are pretty funny.
    Enjoy!

It's amazing that, even if he didn't star in as many iconic entries as Connery (I'd say that Casino Royale and Skyfall will stay as classics, and that NTTD will be about as divisive as OHMSS, and both QoS and Spectre are very flawed, in different ways), Craig has now sealed his place as the equal to Connery in being the definitive Bond, by having a clear arc to his character that people can relate to.

    Yep, I think you're spot-on there.

Don't you think we need to wait 20 to 30 years to make that call?

    No need to wait.

Craig will never be equal to Connery. Not even close. :)

We all have our favorites, and for some that is Daniel Craig.

Craig was edging closer, even for me. Thankfully NTTD was released and it put Connery firmly back in place again as number 1. I doubt anyone will ever knock Connery off his perch.
  • Connery & Moore for me! Craig also has a 3rd place in my ranking.

A retired Bond agreeing to run an errand for Leiter, and later on returning to work for MI6, made me think of the film Billion Dollar Brain, at the start of which Palmer, having retired from the secret service and now working as a private eye, agrees to deliver a package to someone who turns out to have been a former colleague, before being recruited into the service once again by Colonel Ross.

Connery, Craig, Dalton, Moore, Brosnan, then Lazenby for me.

It’s gonna be surreal seeing a Bond closer to my age.

    2. Craig
    3. Lazenby
    4. Dalton

Craig was the first Bond younger than me.

Would you say that factored in why you aren’t as enamored to him as his predecessors?

Craig is firmly in third place for me, so far as his portrayal of Bond. I feel a greater warmth towards the other five though. Craig's Bond has always left me cold. It's been that way since CR.

Had Craig's final film blown me away, he could have taken the number 2 spot (he already had done since CR was released).

Now his tenure is over, and the last 2 films have been a huge letdown, it looks like Dalton has nicked the number 2 slot, for me.

The idea of a future Bond being younger than me sounds surreal. But I probably have to wait another 16 years (more or less) before that happens, depending on how long the new guy sticks around.

I was only 18 when Craig was announced as Bond, so he's essentially the last Bond actor I've ever had to look up to as someone much older than me. The new guy might be my own age, at the very least in my generation.

James Bond was always like, this cool guy who I wanted to be when I grew up. Now we're at a point where if they cast someone 35 in the role, James Bond will be less than a decade older than me. That feels VERY odd.
  • I found NTTD to be a beautiful and deeply human film. It's not without it's flaws but they are far outweighed by its successes IMHO. It brings the curtain down on what has been, for me, the second golden period of Bond films, thanks largely to the talent and commitment that Daniel Craig has brought to the role.

When Bond and Madeleine rode off at the end of Spectre, fans may have suspected an OHMSS type twist of fate awaited them in the next instalment. By reversing that, the film left the audience at my local cinema genuinely saddened. It took some time to really sink in; perhaps as it marked both the passing of an inspirational and beloved character most of us had followed since childhood, as well as heralding the end of tenure for the longest serving Bond.

Mixed with the melancholy though, EON and CF have left a powerful sense of intrigue and a tingle of excitement for the future. Where do we go from here?

In so many of the novels, Bond is resigned to his fate by the end; death seemingly inescapable. You could sense at times that Fleming was mentally flipping a coin to decide whether or not he should continue to write about the character or return him to the dealer as a busted flush on the green baise coffin of the card tables he so loved. Never more so than in YOLT and it is from there that I hope the franchise emerges:

A poison garden, Blofeld dead, a child that doesn't know her father and an agent who has come so close to death it has left him with amnesia. James Bond Will Return?

I try not to get into a Bond comparison because the material and the times always contextualize the actor playing the part. I think they were all right for the moment they played the role. I would not change anything about the actors in any of the films. But if pushed for a definitive answer, I would place Connery and Craig at the top, if only because my five favorite Bond films are theirs.

OK, for me it is currently Craig, Connery, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, Lazenby
    OR
Connery, Craig, Brosnan, Dalton, Moore, Lazenby
It just varies for me. But Daniel Craig is in my top two, yes, and has been since Skyfall. He was 3rd or 4th since Quantum of Solace. The only real consistency in my rankings is Laz.

Everybody is younger than me these days, pretty much. I just had to look up Pierce's age. He is 2 years older than me, that's all.

It will be interesting indeed to see how popular acclaim (movie-going public) for NTTD shakes out six months from now and a year from now. I cannot really guess.

Critics started strongly favorable, I am pretty sure, in countries other than the U.S. I don't even know how it is faring with critics in America - 50/50? I expect more criticism from U.S. critics, but I think some would like and appreciate NTTD a lot. Especially the skill on display in every department. The story's ending is where I see things going mostly 50/50 like/dislike.

I was actually thinking of making my next showing a 3D one just for the sake of it.

You probably won’t get another chance to ever see it again like that.

This is pretty much my entire reason for seeing it in 3D. I'm already seeing it so many times, I might as well try and bring some variety to the proceedings (Mallory would approve! :)) ), I just feel in retrospect that I should have acted on my initial gut desire to do another IMAX screening today .

Yeah I’ll be really disappointed if the IMAX stuff doesn’t make it to Blu Ray again as it didn’t with Skyfall.

Roger is probably my favourite! But Connery and Craig are perhaps level-pegging as the best in my book.

HaphazardStuff gives a pretty non-spoilerish overview of the movie in his latest video. I must say his take is similar to my own.

Was Safin intended to be revealed as Dr No?
Last time I watched the film I noticed someone refers to him as Doctor and the dialogue between he and Bond seems to be heavily edited at points

Could it be he was going to be revealed as Dr No and they cut it?

He's very good at picking apart the scripts and their faults. I also loved the long silence when he says Bond is 8-X
I burst out laughing at that.

It puts the SF escape/tube crash plot objections into perspective.

"gotta wrap it up" is a crucial point.

Actually, I love Connery's Bond as much as the next guy, but his portrayals as Bond were uneven. He was great in DN, awesome in FRWL and GF, but boredom kicked in with TB and his resentment is felt everywhere in YOLT. DAF and NSNA are Connery doing Connery rather than Bond. While not a single performance can top Connery's in FRWL in my opinion--absolute brilliance right there!--Craig's performances have constantly been great. Granted, Craig had different material to work with and something to say about it himself. Perhaps both eras can't be compared no matter how hard one tries. But while Connery had higher highs than Craig, he also had lower lows IMO. There are scenes in YOLT where he barely even acted anymore; he's just going through the motions--CUT! and PRINT!--without anyone telling him to step it up. The submarine scene with Moneypenny always comes to mind. I find it poorly written and badly acted. Craig has remained electric throughout his entire run as Bond. I applaud him for that.
