Midsommar (2019). Obviously heavily inspired by The Wicker Man. Definitely made for an interesting watch.

    SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

A couple hours with good comic book fun. Tom cements himself as the best Spider-Man. Only boring part is the climax as usual. Mid-credit sequence had people gasping and exclaiming in the theatre. It s the best part of the movie. Make sure you stay to watch it.

    Spoilers in the video below:

I am not a fan of Adam Sandler, though a friend recommended it so I begrudgingly watched it. It was actually quite funny and had some good observations in the script, I could easily watch the same couple in another predicament.

Full Metal Jacket I watched this movie on its initial release when I was quite young, so the shock value will never be replicated. Its not my favorite Kubrick film though his genius and meticulousness is on show here, Kubrick never wastes a shot. This truly is an excellent cinematic experience.

The Deer Hunter. Wow what power! There's a reason Christopher Walken is my favorite actor. It's also a shame that Michael Cimino didn't get a chance to really follow up with a great movie like that.

Rambo (2008). First time watch for me and probably the most violent movie I have ever seen, with some quite uncomfortable moments.

Oh, I loved it alright, but certainly didn’t expect to see why I saw.

I think this is the first time I have watched a film starring Dakota Johnson.

    Give SUSPIRIA a try then, @Fire_and_Ice_Returns. ;-)

Or just cut out the middle-man and dive straight into Dario Argento's original - and classic - Suspiria. ;)

Body Heat is a terrific noir thriller. With the Maestro John Barry on score duties. Kathleen Turner is amazing I it . Can't imagine Sigourney Weaver in it, who they wanted originally I believe!

Owing to the fact she's a terrific actress, Weaver would definitely have been able to play the role but it would have been quite a different portrayal - perhaps a less feminine femme fatale, at times. The enigma would still have been there but the twist may not have had the same effect.

Barry's scoring - as so often it does - definitely elevates proceedings.

Are you referring to The Bravados (1958), starring Gregory Peck and directed by Henry King? Because that is a terrific Western.

She could've played it, for sure. I'm not convinced she would've been an improvement over Kathleen Turner, but she can play that kind of sexually charged role. Not something that's often asked of her, though-- the possessed scene in Ghostbusters is perhaps one of the few occassions.

Agree on the score. Perfectly judged main theme. Seductive and sinister. Shades of the theme from Basic Instinct.

I watched a Joan Collins film a few days ago called Our Girl Friday 1953 with Kenneth More, Joan was gorgeous, the film was decent.

He was given the chance, hence the auteur mess that was Heaven's Gate (1980), effectively leaving United Artists bankrupt.

Yeah, it was shame, I agree. The fact that the Hollywood elite lobbied heavily against The Deer Hunter to favour other movies in the Oscar race, principally Jane Fonda's Coming Home, just goes to show how corrupt the whole awards thing got back then. When it came out about these underhand tactics I stopped watching the Oscars soon after that. Haven't believed in it since.

I know... Annie Hall over Star Wars? Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan? I bet Hollywood would take them back, especially considering the producers of the films: Woody Allen and Harvey Weinstein. Also, I think if Titanic or Avatar had flopped, James Cameron would be the new Michael Cimino. End rant.

The Oscars are much more about lobbying than artistic merit. Attending parties, saying hello to everybody, putting out ads... it's politics.

On a related note, outside the US, the Golden Globes are for some reason seen as highly legitimate. Apparently most people don't know that, like Gary Oldman said, it's "90 nobodies having a wank."

Toy Story 4 (2019). Way better than I expected. My personal ranking of the series would go:

    1. Toy Story
    2. Toy Story 3
    3. Toy Story 4
    4. Toy Story 2

But I REALLY hope this is the last this time. The ending was brilliant.

The thing is that they're all good. It's the one series that is almost impossible to rank. If I had to I'd go.
