You better believe it. :D
Oof.
Yes, Francoise Dorleac was great in That Man from Rio. It's a fine film too!
I guess I don't really have anything to say. I just want this image to appear on this latest page as well. There, it's done.
This fan trailer for a Sean Connery CR casts Sophia as Vesper:
I’ll add Darlanne Fluegel (as Stacy AVTAK) for the group’s consideration.
A much in demand actress during the 1980s, I remember Ms. Fluegel mostly for roles in “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984), “To Live and Die in L.A.” (1985) and “Running Scared” (1986). And I must admit, I was totally smitten with her based on the later. She later appeared on TV’s “Wise Guys” and “Hunter.” Since she would have been only 33 years of age at the time of AVTAK, we still may have had the whole “age thingy” with Roger Moore, but who knows.
Sadly, Ms. Fluegel died a few years ago (2017) from early onset Alzheimer's disease at the age of 64.
Going further back to the pre-Bond era, how about either Dorothy Malone or Martha Vickers from “the Big Sleep” (1946) in the role as a “fem-fatale?”
@Dwayne Haha, yes! Reading some trivia on IMDB after watching the film, she claimed it was the worst movie she was ever in. It's certainly not a good film, but I still found it a little bit enjoyable.
The Matt Helm movies were – of course – completely silly, but I do enjoy them. From Dean Martin playing…. a comic version of himself really, to the “lounge lizard” musical scores, those movies were a product of their time. That said, I’m kind of glad that there was no 5th movie, as I couldn’t see this formula continuing to work in the 1970s. Even at their silliest, the Roger Moore movies were significantly more grounded. Yet, like CR’67 I’m glad they these films exist, and I actually watch them several times a year.
Plus, any series that can feature Sella Stevens, Daliah Lavi, Ann Margaret, Janice Rule, Senta Berger, Beverly Adams (as “Lovey Kravezit” no less!), Sharon Tate, Nancy Kwan, Tina Louise and Elke Sommer is OK in my book!!!! And note, how many of those actresses that I’ve listed are posted elsewhere in this thread!
I think I’ll watch the “Wrecking Crew” tonight!
The Matt Helm films are definitely a nice time capsule. It's very obvious to see where the Austin Powers films took (some) inspiration from, haha! The running joke about Frank Sinatra is also very enjoyable. As you mention, it's difficult to see these films lasting beyond the films that were made; perhaps a fifth film could have worked had it been made and released shortly after The Wrecking Crew.
And yes, the series really got their "Helm girl" castings right. You could easily imagine any of these names as Bond girl candidates back in the 60's. Daliah Lavi of course, played an unofficial one.
Love this scene with her and Bogie:
Essentially, the Matt Helms are like a cinematic version of Dino's musical comedy variety show of the time period where he and his special guest stars do a James Bond spoof.
Don't forget Camilla Sparv:
I love Lalo Schiffrin's(Bullitt, Mission Impossible) score:
They should have retained the title song as a Matt Helm theme for the rest of the series.
BTW1: I did get to watch "The Wrecking Crew" last night - and it's as cheesy as ever :)). You just have to submit to it and enjoy the absurd nature of it. Maybe a "What's New Pussycat?", "CR'67" double feature on the weekend?
BTW2: All of the older Godzilla flicks can be streamed at HBO Max.
John Barry composed the score.
I'll make sure to give that film a watch, @CraterGuns! Is that Richard Bradford with her? I've been watching a bit of Man in a Suitcase lately, starring Bradford.
Yes, that's Bradford... Plays a really loathsome jerk in THE CHASE. (Janice Rule's character is having an affair with him, publicly flaunting it in husband Robert Duvall's face.)
Cool! It's an impressive cast, really: Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Angie Dickinson etc.
I've only seen her in The Italian Job, and in the clip below, she's playing for rather histrionic comedy with Mr. Micklewhite, something which isn't necessarily Bondian, but I sense some potential there for a cool American Bond girl. And she looked great, of course.
I was reminded of her appearence as a guest panelist on What's My Line with Roger Moore as the mystery guest. The mystery guest segment begins at 15:55.
Beautiful woman.
Well, she did get to be a Bond girl of sorts playing Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Nothing against Jessica 6 but if Tim had played Bond in FYEO I would've definitely wanted Carole Bouquet's Melina playing his leading lady.
Otherwise, I have always considered that Charlotte Rampling could have been a magnificent Bond Girl during the 70s-early 80s. If I have no trouble imagining her as Fleming's Vesper, it is obvious that the role would never have been on the table during this time. Nevertheless, I think she could made the parts of Solitaire or Octopussy her own.
Vesper would have suited her perfectly.
Or Tracy, yes. Those cheekbones should have graced a Bond film.
Assuming she could've become a Bond girl in the nineties-noughties, she would've most likely worked with Pierce Brosnan. I can sense there would have been a good chemistry between them.
