NO TIME TO DIE- is it divisive?

However, whenever there is a new Bond film out, there is a natural enthusiasm as people have such pent up excitement. I recall all the Craig films from QOS to SP being lauded initially by fans before a backlash kicked in. Granted the backlashes were never unilateral, but negative sentiment takes time to manifest. For this reason, I think - inevitably - NTTD will become one of the most divisive films of the entire canon.

It'll be a film that in 20-30 years time people will say is their new favourite in the series and folk will say "Really?" I think OHMSS had that reputation in the 1990's before before now being accepted as a classic. The most recent example is The Last Jedi. That film's negative response was quite instantaneous. However, I think with many fans and casual viewers it's considered the best Star Wars film.

It's interesting because after looking at the "rank Daniel Craig bond films" thread I was like wow, it seems like half the people dislike NTTD. Then I was wondering if the film was really polarizing amongst fans, but I suppose so far, this thread has shown that to be untrue.

I kind of agree. Yet, it could potentially have the opposite effect too. A lot of the detractors dislike NTTD because of one particular plot point previously considered unthinkable by many fans. Once the initial shock has faded and people come to terms with what happened, they might start to appreciate the film much more.

Very positive, for me .... in essence, the Craig arc of films, but especially this one, is what I had long dreamed of since the time of my fandom waning in the late Moore years.

There must be fair few people like me who enjoyed the film more than they thought they would, thought there were a lot of good things in it, and most importantly, were never bored by it; however, there was a lot of melodrama, and it just didn't land for me. I had a pretty good time, and I'm curious enough to buy it on Blu-ray to see how my feelings for the film develop with more viewings (I didn't even consider buying QoS or Spectre), but at the moment I think it's an uneven misfire, possessing some great moments but ultimately not that all that good as a whole.

Until I watch it again I don't want to vote either way. At the moment I think it's middling, nowhere near as good as CR or SF, but more entertaining than QoS, and certainly streets ahead of the woeful Spectre.

That thread might not be the best indicator because someone who ranks it the weakest Craig film might have still enjoyed it overall, or at least enjoyed it enough to have more positive than negative thoughts.

I've never heard a single person claim the TLJ was the best Star Wars movie. Ever. Its user score on Metacritic is 4.1. By comparison, the The Phantom Menace's is 6.1.
    https://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-viii---the-last-jedi
There was always a huge disconnect between what critics claimed about TLJ and how audiences felt about it. It's basically credited with destroying the sequel trilogy's arching narrative, and I'm also pretty certain that Rian Johnson's planned series of Star Wars movies has been cancelled.

The same "let's burn everything down" pathology that created TLJ was clearly at play in NTTD, which is utterly baffling. NTTD's user metascore is currently 6.3, same as QOS's. By comparison, SP is 6.8 and TWINE's is 7.2.

To be honest, I was disappointed with the movie. Bad ending, too much drama. I'm getting tired with the direction they are going lately and miss the lighter tone of earlier movies.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do strive for a lighter tone next time around. That's been the Eon method for decades now: too far to one extreme with one film is immediately followed up by equal moves in the opposing direction. Moonraker is followed up by For Your Eyes Only; Die Another Day followed up by Casino Royale.

Stick me on a negative too, not that it will count for much on here, as most on this forum love NTTD.

I’ve never met or spoke to anyone who thinks the last Jedi is the best Star Wars film. Maybe the best Star Wars film where Luke milks a giant space cow tit though.

thumbs up for me. I posted a while back that I would be annoyed if they killed off Bond. I got spoiled before the film but they way they led up to the ending was a bold choice and it paid off.

When you have THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, there’s no possible way THE LAST JEDI has a shot at being considered the best. I rank it third best.

Most baffling is whenever people cite REVENGE OF THE SITH as the best. I think that speaks more on their childhood nostalgia than judgement of a good film, because it’s NOT a good film by any measure.

It seems some of these votes are accounting for personal taste, when the question is whether it’s a divisive film or not.

Rules from the start were vote how you feel as positive or negative. Toward a consensus or otherwise.

I believe the test is to see what the split is in terms of those who liked it and those who didn’t to determine how divisive it is.

Then I was definitely the one misunderstanding, apologies. Good to see so many of us liked it enough, at least.

I’m gonna say negative, it’s a good spy movie but a terrible bond film. It just doesn’t feel like a bond film to me.
Skyfall without a truly main Bond girl felt more like a true bond movie.

Hard negative here. No surprise. The ending.

I feel that for many people it isn't quite so binary, hence the lack of negative responses in this thread. The biggest dividing factor I think is the ending, and it might make more sense to ask for opinions on that specifically. I think if the question posed was regarding the ending only, the results would be much more even.

For myself, I can't really respond either way since I actually really enjoy the first half of the film, and find it alright in the latter half. But when it comes down to the ending, I feel very negatively about it. I can't really bring myself to say that I feel negatively about the overall film, or very firmly so at least.

Same. Not quite the film I wanted, but I did enjoy it and its good on its own merits - and, yes, the ending undermines it for me, but not to the point where I'm down on the whole thing. So I guess I'm not in either camp.`

Taken altogether, a clear positive. Sort of lost track of the vote tally so far, but it's probably about 30/3 by now. Marvellous movie, however the finish.
