I look forward to No Way Home's release, just to experience what I feel is going to be a big fan backlash, or in the other extreme, a denial fueled love fest. I lean more towards a train wreck, as the hype has gotten out of control. This movie, from the beginning, has felt like the opposite of what I'd want from a Spider-Man movie. It's no secret I don't like this Spider-Man, and find everything after the good start in Civil War and Homecoming to be an absolute misfire from every angle. We went from a really great, endearing Peter who was fighting for the right reasons in that classic friendly neighborhood way to a Peter who was just Iron Man Jr. constantly stuck in Tony's shadow. Far From Home couldn't decide whether he was to be his own hero, or if he was just Tony but younger, and it's so bizarre. I just don't find any consistency in what they're going for here, as the character is all over the place in his arc and motivations.

I haven't watched a lot of trailers for No Way Home, but it's been impossible to avoid the hoopla. I personally don't know how this movie can avoid not being a mess, for the plot and the villains they're trying to balance. I have zero faith in this creative team, as they've not produced anything that I've enjoyed in any way similar to the original Spider-Man films; there's no heart or meaning to any of it. It just seems like all this Peter Parker does is stupid things now, then acts surprised when everything falls apart. He thought it was smart to entrust Tony's super powerful EDITH to a guy he knew for a couple days (who turned out evil, surprise surprise), and now after seeing the power of the infinity gauntlet and what Thanos could do with colored stones, he thinks messing with time is the right way to go. I can't relate to this moron, or sympathize with him, because he constantly acts like a simpleton and all the pain he experiences he brings upon himself.

I was already groaning way back in FFH when they ripped off the Raimi films to get JK Simmons back, which I thought was a creatively barren move, especially given that the whole magic of the Jameson and Spider-Man dynamic is predicated on the former not knowing the latter's identity. For JJ to know who Spider-Man is in the first appearance we ever see of him in the MCU let me know from the beginning that the creative team had no idea what they were doing, or what the functions of these characters are intended to be. Hot Aunt May should've clued me in sooner, I guess.

Then, finding out that they've apparently brought back the classic Raimi villains made me groan even more. There's just too many villains, and not even a lot of good ones. Goblin and Ock are great, because they were great to begin with, but Lizard and Electro were pitiful and Sandman is so out of place because he wasn't even a bad guy in comparison to the others, he was just a guy trying to help his kid. I don't know how they can bring back all these villains as they were, as they all had motivations different from what they'd need to have in a movie like this. It just feels like a failure before launch.

I don't even want to think about the high possibility of Tobey coming back, because I don't want Sony and Watts and anyone else involved screwing with the legacy of those original films.

No Way Home doesn’t really do anything for me. Having Spidey in trouble with his identity exposed and his friends in danger as a result is a great concept for a film, but it looks like they’re going to brush that storyline aside quickly to open the door for a nostalgia-fest?

Introducing villains from other Spider-Man movies really doesn’t allow for any stakes for Holland’s Spidey. He doesn’t know who they are or what they’re capable of, they don’t know who he is and don’t have any history with him, so that idea just falls flat.

The trailer does suggest this with Peter and his friends snickering at Doc Ock's name and Ock saying "You're not Peter Parker." It does seem like it's going to be all for the sake of nostalgia. Which will still be interesting surely, but especially with the inclusion of Doctor Strange (this Peter Parker sure does love his goateed mentors, doesn't he?)

Goateed mentors who used to be Sherlock Holmes :)

I'm personally amused, not miserable. It's the only attitude you can have at this point, especially with Sony's cartoonish antics.

I was very satisfied with Endgame and how it wrapped everything up, and am at peace with how everything is downhill from there in this universe. It was a great run, but nothing lasts forever.

Technically he was a Skrull, so we can't even call Fury Peter's mentor even in jest.

I agree with OBradyM0Bondfanatic7.Endgame was a great finish to the MCU.But I’m not interested in anything going forward.Iron Man and Captain America ( The real one ) were the pillars of that universe and with them gone,it’s just nothing now,

@AstonLotus, I was at least looking forward to what they were going to do with Black Panther, but then the unfortunate death of Chadwick came and, to avoid Twitter lynching them for dishonoring his legacy, Disney seems to have decided to kill off the character instead of simply recasting him to continue his story (which I think Chadwick wouldn't like, but whatever). So now I'm not remotely interested in anything in the MCU going forward, and that's a shame.

Cap was my guy, and he got an amazing ending I never want them to return to. Tony was also a gigantic part of what made these movies great, and that's wrapped up too, unless some multiverse shenanigans come about and the past is brought back in the future. But the best days of the MCU are definitely behind it. They will never, could never, reach the heights of what they had, as it was a right place right time kind of thing. True lightning in the bottle filmmaking that becomes less and less possible the more time goes on. Just have to appreciate how long it lasted.

Agree 100% with all you said there.Didn’t know they are actually going to kill off the character of T,Challa though. If that’s true then that’s messed up.The creators of the Fast And Furious franchise handled the death of Paul Walker much better by making it clear that the character of Brian O’ Connor is still alive in that universe. They really should have recast T,Challa.I’d think Chadwick Bozeman would want the character to continue. No one complained when Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore in Harry Potter after Richard Harris passed away.

It’s saying something about the sad state of the MCU that the one thing that people are most excited for going forward is the return of Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.

@AstonLotus, I've long had the impression that T'Challa will have an offscreen death, probably of an illness of something (which is even more screwed up given how Chad died), then they would see him off in a ceremony and pick a new leader and Panther, etc. The production of the second Black Panther film is an absolute mess from all I've heard, and it kind of serves them right. You can't really make a continuation off of such a void in the universe of the films. Recasting T'Challa would have preserved the character and would have made the big plans they had for him still possible, but killing him wastes all that potential and I think dishonors what Chad would actually want. No way would that man want the character to never be played by anyone else, and to have another young black actor miss out on the opportunity to play such an important character to that community. But you know how Twitter people are: they'll hang you for literally anything these days.

As for Tobey returning as Spider-Man, that's caused me more worry than anything. I don't want this creative team to have their hands on anything from the Raimi films. Don't trust them a lick to do anything of quality.

I am not a fan of the Holland films the only thing that stood out was Keaton's appearance in the first film, other than that I find the films inferior to the Raimi and Webb films. The earlier Spiderman films had much more invention and captured aspects of the universe much better for me than the MCU.

One thing that does give me a little bit of hope is the character design of Electro, perhaps these are not the exact characters from the other films.

Mary Jane in the Sam Raimi movies was one of the most unlike-able people in the history of love interests. She was so selfish and mean spirited. She’s a great example of how not to write a love interest.

Agree easily the worst aspect of the films, an appalling character.

It’s part of why I struggle with the Raimi films. He’s a wonderful director with an eye for action sequences and camerawork, but MY GOD the characterizations are horrendous. Peter Parker is an insufferable cliche dork while Mary Jane is a narcissistic bitch.

The first AMAZING title on the other hand is worse but in a way that everything is duller. It’s my worst ranked Spidey film. But then comes along AMAZING 2 and that actually has my favorite characterization of Spidey, but the film is admittedly a big mess as usual with Orci/Kurtzman scripts. In fact they’re the reason I skipped out ASM2 in theaters because I was still burned from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and didn’t want to reward their future efforts with the admission of a ticket.

As for me, the Sam Raimi movies are clichés. Their legacies are mostly internet memes. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the Spider-Man 2 and 1 was a good start. One moment in 3 was decent. They haven’t aged well though.

As for Amazing Spider-Man 1, it has one of the best romances in comic book movie history. The chemistry between the two was great. The 2 movies just repeated themselves too soon after the first trilogy.

I enjoyed Homecoming, but I forgot a lot about Far From Home. Tom Holland and the MCU’s is still developing with me, but it’s more positive than negative.

In other MCU news, my least favorite person is coming back it seems:

Will it be more feminist garbage or a character that has no personality? Let’s see.

Interesting.I find the MJ of the Holland films to be the most unlikeable one. She’s so bad that I think it has to be intentional.I think Holland had much better chemistry with the girl who turned out to be Vultures daughter.

I feel like Zendaya’s MJ is just forced MCU humor at it’s obvious. I also feel that they are trying to build a relationship over time with them. Those are just my thoughts.

What’s bad about the MJ in the Holland films?

Where to start? Makes sarcastic put down remarks on just about every character she comes into contact with.Does nothing but moan and complain all the time.Looks like a guy in drag.

And that’s all I remember from Homecoming and Iv seen that a few times.Iv only seen Far From Home once and can barely remember anything about it except that Zendayas MJ is even more annoying.I can’t see how Peter would be interested in her.

Seeing her fall from a tower in the No Way Home trailer makes me hope she’ll suffer Gwen Stacys fate.

Imagine that the two MJs meet in No Way Home. Place your bets on who’s the bigger see you next Tuesday. And expect a cringeworthy joke at the end of it.

I’ll just say I like Zendaya’s MJ because she actually behaves like an awkward teenage girl who’s sarcasm is really more of a self defense mechanism because she doesn’t know how to show affection for others, especially Peter. Seeing those barriers break down between the two and trying to figure out each other is really cute and honest of the way teenagers are.

One thing I hope they actually do with the two is show them actually go through a break up. Peter had TONS of dates/relationships from high school to college that I think it would be refreshing to show that these two are not a pair meant to last. It’s a cliche in Hollywood to suggest a romance is something that’s meant to last for the rest of a couple’s lives, and I hope MCU doesn’t fall into that trap of painting Zendaya’s MJ as “the one” for Peter. So far, I like that we’ve seen Holland’s Peter being smitten over two different girls.

That was something I didn’t like in Raimi’s trilogy where he turned Mary Jane into Peter’s next door girl that he’s known since they were 6 and has loved ever since. That’s Superman’s Lana Lang, not Mary Jane. The only thing I liked in SPIDER-MAN 3 was the implication that they were not a good couple and shouldn’t continue. But that’s left ambiguous at the end, never to be followed up by the cancellation of 4.

Now I see it, lol. Particularly in Dune. Come to think of it, and I’m not being sexist, but a lot of the women in the MCU are there just to complain and look good. And don’t worry, the guys do it too. The MCU is a movie series with a set formula. Some of the long going traits aren’t good for the future, though.

Man, honestly couldn't disagree more. I thought MJ was a well developed character film to film. Definitely never got a selfish, mean or egotistical vibe from her at all. I hear this same opinion from other people and just don't get it. Must've been watching different movies.

And Tobey's Peter speaks for itself. He's far and away one of my all-time favorite protagonists, and is the perfect amalgamation of what I think Spider-Man is and should be. No other actor since has come close to nailing that blend of innocence, good-heartedness and loveable dorkiness that I love about the character. Tobey really had it all.

Character history isn’t important but character motivation is. Those 5 villains have no reason to fight this Peter Parker, they have no idea who he is and have no interpersonal relationship with him or any of the other characters in this movie. They’re just attacking him because “they’re evil” and that’s really lame.
