    I greatly dislike how the Academy goes so much for films with social commentary, and mostly serious ones. For once I'd like to see a really stupid, silly comedy get an Oscar nomination. They can have as much craft and artistry as any drama.

    They did that for a while. They were called Woody Allen movies. He said that his Oscar wins and records meant nothing to him. If they came with a underage girl, I’m sure he would have said something different.

    Exactly. It was extended after 2008 precisely because people thought a popular AND critically acclaimed film like THE DARK KNIGHT not getting a nomination but a mediocre title like THE READER entering the slot was egregious. Opening it up was to assure popular titles might at least get a nomination, and it initially worked. But then the titles got even more insular. So much there was that controversial “Most Popular Film” proposal. I think that really exposed how out of touch the Academy became.

    Go back 50-40 years ago and it was possible to see huge blockbusters like THE GODFATHER, JAWS, ROCKY, STAR WARS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK all got nominated and even won. We’re so far from that now.

    Still, I was thinking more along the lines of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker or the Farrelly Brothers. Mel Brooks' films got some nominations in the seventies, but not for Best Picture I think.

    One of the Farrelly brothers did win an Oscar, it was for GREEN BOOK.

    Granted, it’s not from his usual brand of gross out comedies like THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. It’s definitely got all the qualifications for Oscar bait.

    I imagine that’s the case. Not all nominations are done by just watching a screener. There’s research that needs to be done in order to validate an eligibility.

    This, 100%. I’ve always said that they’re too limited with their choices. They need to be more open-minded and unbiased - if a screwball comedy deserves Best Picture, so be it. Time to make things exciting again!
  • The Best Picture race is largely driven by the festival circuit and studio lobbying, and I think that's unlikely to change. If anything, it's at least a positive that international films are getting into the nominations every year now. I wouldn't mind a separate category for best popular film, with strict qualification thresholds, e.g.:
    1. Min. $100m US BO
    2. Min. $250m global BO

    Another idea is to add some categories for genre films e.g., Action/Adventure, Thriller/Horror, Comedy/Musical, etc.

    Without a doubt @leas_mole ... That snub was the biggest one. It shocked me. Whether one loves or loathes this film, I think most would agree it was gorgeous (especially after the complaints about the look of Spectre).

    The Academy seemingly doesn't have a lot of time for James Bond when it comes to the more prestigious awards.

    It’s ridiculous to expect a Bond film to get best picture nominations.At the end of the day,they are just seen as action films.More original and daring works should be celebrated.This helps them reach a wider audience.

    These days though the awards are just a virtue signaling exercise.Already I’m seeing lots of “ Oh look! Jane Campion is the first WOMAN director to get nominated twice “ and so forth.

    "Coming 2 America" is nominated for Best MakeUp.
    And "Don't Look Up" is nominated for 4 Oscars.

    There you have the really stupid, silly comedies.

    But you write as if "the Academy" was a room with 5 people sitting in it deciding what to do.
    It's 10.000 people from the movie industry, that are spread all over the world.
    It just seems, that most of them don't see a movie like "Coming 2 America" in a category like "Script", "Direction" etc.

    On the other hand:
    There were almost 300 feature films eligible for this years Oscars.
    Just because a movie is not nominated for an Oscar, doesn't make it a bad movie.
    And a movie is not a "loser" just because it didn't get nominated.

    Just like a film isn't "great" because it was nominated for one. Some of the Academy members vote in categories where they didn't watch a single one of the shorts/films that was nominated, simply picking at random or selecting based off what a friend or family member said or recommended. No sense in getting hung up on these awards or their merit when a particular favorite isn't nominated.

    They’re women and minorities. I guess celebrating their trivial but notable milestones triggers some people.

    By that measure,do you think Fast And Furious 9 should have gotten nominated for academy awards? ( it was the first film of the pandemic era to make over 700 million )

    NTTD is easily my favorite picture of 2021. It was the only film I went to see last year. Seriously, I'm happy the film got the nominations it did, though.
    Even though I may not like many of the choices made on this particular Bond film, I do like that Eon stuck to their guns and just went for it.
    I'm going to guess the song will win. Kind of shows how much music tastes have changed over the decades. So many great and iconic Barry Bond themes were never nominated, yet songs like TWOTW not only get a nod but a win. I tend to think Eilish's song is no better or worse than TWOTW, but nowhere near as iconic as GF, YOLT, LALD, AVTAK, etc.

    I think the Oscar-winning songs can be analogized to actors.

    Many actors don't get an Oscar early in their careers but later as kind of a lifetime achievement award. An example is Al Pacino, who surely should have gotten one for many of his wonderful performances in the '70s, but finally gets one for...Scent of a Woman?

    Similarly, a strong case could be made for GF, YOLT, LALD, and especially NDIB (which is widely considered one of the worst Oscar decisions).

    Listen how often the Oscar broadcasts reference LALD and NDIB even though the songs didn't actually win.

    I also figured he meant theaters. I only saw two in cinemas last year but neither of them were my overall favorite of the year, NTTD included.
