I think it will be his last feature film, although he will continue to direct the occasional episodic television (as he did with ER and CSI) and produce and perhaps write/co-write other projects.

Right now he seems far more interested in doing his podcast with Roger Avary and writing books. Sadly, I think he's pretty awful in the latter category and desperately needs a good editor.

Why's that? I quite enjoyed his last two books, but Cinema Speculation, understandably so, is definitely a rollercoaster of quality depending on if you're into the performers and films he's describing.

He seems pretty determined to want to stick with his rule. He always brought up Hitchcock’s later films being regarded as a decline from his prime years and doesn’t want to repeat that, so the idea is that he finishes directorial career on a high note. Like if Hitchcock had decided to call the quits after PSYCHO.

I would be surprised if Tarantino breaks his own rule if he has an idea eating at him. But that’s probably why he’s gonna try to make himself busy by doing different types of projects like novels or limited event series for HBO, etc. When he was developing his ill fated Trek film, the idea for him was that he would regard it as his “franchise film” and not part of his official ten film canon. He made a similar remark about a sequel to KILL BILL 2. He considers the two films one, so he’d lump the potential third in the same manner.

I agree with you 100%, with both his books. I'd be happy with him just writing books. Sounds like The Films of Rick Dalton is next. One of my most anticipated pieces of media, hoping to come next year! Minor spoiler for Cinema Speculation: QT is right about Steve McQueen and Bullitt: McQueen only played himself as a movie star, not much range, honestly. Just like John Wayne. As for Bullitt, he's right: apart from the car chase, there's not much great about it. A bit of my complaining is being WAY too exposed to the car chase, which worked mainly due to the editing.

Agreed, and even then, the editing still leads to a car chase that isn't terribly natural and can't be logically followed. It re-uses a couple of the exact same streets but there's no coherency in following it from Point A to Point B. It's still very, very impressive to watch unfold though.

    Tarantino loves Bullitt!

BULLITT is a great movie. The only issue that I have with it are the scenes with Jacqueline Bisset, which are a bit hackneyed (even for 1968). Otherwise it's a masterclass of a police procedural and thriller -- well-written, acted and especially directed. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell ya.

Tarantino knows a lot about movies, but he's also prone to factual errors, misinterpretations, staggering assumptions, and sometimes, I suspect, he says things just to be contrarian.

True about QT, considering he likes to change history to his viewpoints. The main problem I have with Bullitt as I’ve said is overexposure. McQueen was so full of himself, that he could be hard to watch. As for the car chase, notice the same Volkswagen drive by on occasion. We’ve come a long way in car chase scenes since then. Robert Vaughn was awesome in it though, a great villain. And Jacqueline Bisset was just nice to look at. It’s not that I don’t like the movie. For me, there really isn’t much going for it.

I'm starting to get worried about The Movie Critic. We haven't heard anything from it since before the strikes. There was a rumor that it was fully cast, with some familiar names. Maybe he's writing some books instead. Both are welcome in my eyes. More Rick Dalton, Vega Brothers and Django!

I think the strikes merely held up the flow of news and we're going to be seeing more in the next few months.

He also lives with his family in Israel, so you can imagine other matters might be occupying his attention.

Remember @MaxCasino … Tarantino peppers his films with great, unique characters with limited scenes (think Pacino as the agent in OUATIH)…. So don’t lose faith— at least, not yet!!

Very true, @peter. One of the things I like about QT is that he has "the power" these days to engage a famous actor for a mere one or two scenes. People want to be in his films, so they'll take anything he has to offer. I bet he could have Robert Pattinson play a train conductor with no more than two lines, or briefly show Toni Collette as a hospital nurse. People respect QT as an artist to the point where such things are perfectly possible now.

And, the cherry on the top of being cast in this film, @DarthDimi , is the fact that this is his last (I do believe he will stick to his guns on this being his final film as director!)!

I regret that decision. He made cool, generational films in the '90s and he made incredibly mature films in more recent times. He's still growing as a filmmaker, IMO. I'm sure he has many more great films in him. But, you're right, @peter, he is probably going to quit after number ten.

I very much agree. I thought OUATIH was a beautiful “love” story. And then of course, QT pushes the bounds of decency in his last act twist— which I loved because of my great discomfort, 😂.

He has much more to give as a director. But I hope that he will still write and produce films (and then consult on those films!!).

He promises plays and more books in his future…

I don't think anything is given just yet, as we don't know when Inarritu's latest film will begin production. I can't imagine he'd sign up for Tarantino's final film then change his mind like that weeks later.

@DEKE_RIVERS, what rumor? The one about Tarantino retiring from directing films after The Movie Critic? It's not a rumor at all.

You’re right @Creasy47 . The man has been saying it for years.

He's announced this will be his last film.

His had Bill Maher begging him not to do this, but QT is sticking to his guns.

    This isn’t a rumour.

    No, the Tom Cruise rumor.

But he hired Brad Pitt after all. So, I don't know.

We know that you don’t know. It’s amazing that you can admit this for once. If it’s just a conspiracy theory, please don’t post it. It’s ok to speculate. Just don’t criticize others for not buying your rumors and conspiracy theories.

I’m happy to see that the movie is coming along. If this is QT’s last movie, that’s ok. His legacy is safe.

That something is truly going to happen and there’s no other way it won’t. An example with you is that only Martin Campbell, Denis Villeneuve or Christopher Nolan can direct Bond 26. There are plenty of other directors who could probably do just as good of a job as them. As for QT, it’s ok to speculate on if he’ll truly call directing quits. He says A LOT of things. He is a better writer anyway. So what I’m saying is that it’s ok to speculate. We like to hear your thoughts on things as well. Just please be respectful of others, and try not to repeat yourself. I’m not mad, just be careful before posting.

I believe Tarantino when he says he won’t direct another film. He's a quirky and an eccentric man, with an encyclopedic knowledge of films. He set this little deadline for himself because I think that’s the way this guy’s brain functions.

I do look forward to him writing scripts (both feature and TV), plays and novels. I also can see him producing, and doing some teaching.

He has a full career to look forward to after this tenth film…

Whether it's more books, original scripts, TV shows, or some long-awaited miniseries he's flirted with doing in the past, I personally can't wait to see what he does with The Movie Critic and beyond. I also think he'll stick to his word but I can't say I'd ever be upset if he decides to un-retire and come back for one more film some years later.
